Step 2

With the hobby knife, scratch and score the smooth top of both plastic bottle caps. You can also use high grit sandpaper; the point is to give the surface some much-needed texture for glue to stick to (illustration 4).

With superglue or epoxy glue, attach the bottle caps to each other, top to top (illustration 5). Optionally, you can use a large binder clip (51 mm) to hold the caps together as they dry (illustration 6). Make sure the glue does not clog the holes.

Step 3

Fill one of the 2-liter bottles with tap water until it’s one-half to three-fourths of the way full. Add colored lamp oil (citronella torch fuel) to help emphasize the swirling vortex: because oil is less dense then water (see page 90), the colored oil will remain on the top of the water until it spirals down.

Optionally, you can create flying debris by adding 1 tablespoon of iridescent glitter to the bottle. Other debris like bits of Styrofoam can be added as well. Just be mindful of the diameter of the connector hole—don’t add anything so big that it will cause clogs. You can also create bubbles by adding a few drops of dish soap.
